Vishweshwar Anantharam is a co-founder & CEO of the business. Formerly, he was a Managing Director in the Securities Division of Goldman Sachs in Hong Kong, heading the Macro Sales business advising Hedge Funds & Asset Managers on EM Asia Trading opportunities. He started his career in 1997 trading govt. bonds & fixed income derivatives with the treasury team of Credit Lyonnais in India. He joined Bank of America in 2000 and went on to Head the FX Trading desk of Bank of America in India in 2002. In 2003 he was elevated to the Short Term Interest Rate Trading Desk of Bank of America in Singapore, to trade the regional Asian markets. In 2005 he ventured to start Libran Asset Management, an Asian Macro Fund, along with another partner. The 10 yrs. of trading background and his HF start-up experience, helped shape his self-driven approach of formulating macro views and constructing portfolio strategies. From 2006 onwards he has been advising Hedge Funds on the unique local drivers and the concomitant opportunities in EM Asia Fixed Income & FX markets, firstly with Citibank Singapore and then with Goldman Sachs from 2009. His core competency is in the Emerging Markets of Asia having watched evolution of the financial markets through various business, growth and policy cycles, right from the Asian Financial Crisis to Brexit. His entrepreneurial instincts were honed at Goldman Sachs, where he had to compete with the well-entrenched local market players, despite the constraints of a non-local institution by developing robust analytics & creating a strong organizational framework.
Vishweshwar grew up in Mumbai and is a Chartered Accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. He is also a gold medalist in Financial Management from the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India.
William Hau is a co-founder & CIO of the business and will chair the Investment Committee. Over the last 22 years of trading Asian FX & Rates, he has witnessed the markets’ evolution and cycles and honed his skills as a directional macro trader. Formerly, William was heading the Greater China FX & Rates business in the Securities Division for Goldman Sachs in Hong Kong up until June 2016 when he resigned to form Vanhau AM. He started his career in 1995 with Chemical Bank in Hong Kong, initially on the credit and asset swaps trading desk and then moved on to Fixed Income and FX trading. He joined Deutsche Bank in 2000 with responsibility for HKD FX and Rates trading. In 2005, William joined the Asia Macro Trading Desk of Goldman Sachs Tokyo in 2005 and was one of the senior risk takers in the proprietary trading group. William moved along with the Asia Macro Trading Desk to Hong Kong in 2007, taking responsibility for the Greater China FX and Rates trading business. Over the next 10 years, he build a strong presence for GS in Asia despite its limited local market access. He is well respected amongst his peers in the industry, especially by many of the HF managers who regard him as the ‘China Specialist’ within Goldman Sachs Trading Desk.
William holds a BSc in Economics & Accounting from the University of Bristol.
Michael Friedlander is a Managing Partner & CRO/COO of the business. Michael has over three decades of professional experience with more than 20 years in financial services, including more than10 years as the COO/CFO/CRO. He started his finance career in private equity in the LatAm energy sector for Power Markets Development Corporation in 1997. He joined APG Asset Management New York in 2005 as the Risk Manager (CRO) responsible for oversight of the Hedge Funds, Real Estate, and Fixed Income portfolios being managed out of the NYC Office, principally focusing on external manager operational risk. In 2006 he relocated to Hong Kong to establish the local presence of APG in Asia, as the COO/CRO and had responsibility for initial and ongoing due diligence for external managers across Asia. Following the Global Financial Crisis, Michael developed a comprehensive risk protocol for APG based upon global best practices for operational risk, market risk and governance. His core competency is risk management, and was regularly invited by organizations such as The Asian Development Bank, and other emerging institutional investors to provide ‘master classes’ in risk. In 2012 he joined Millennium Hong Kong to help consolidate and institutionalize the Asian business as the Regional Head of Risk (CRO)/Regional Head of Operations/Regional Head of IT for Asia. He is an Expert Programmer in VBA, proficient in C++ & has built strong quant risk architectures in his previous engagements. He has managed a broad spectrum of complex alternative investment strategies & jurisdictions and carries a deep understanding of governance, business structuring, compliance and operational risk. Michael’s penchant for statistics & financial risk related research could be gleaned from his various academic qualifications. Prior to joining Vanhau he was teaching statistics at the NY University, and formerly taught financial derivatives at Universidad Gabriela Mistral in Santiago, Chile.
Michael grew up in the US and is a Registered Professional Engineer, and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). He has an undergraduate and graduate degrees in Engineering from the University of Arizona, an MBA from Thunderbird, and a PhD in Statistics from Hong Kong University.
Dr. Anthony WANG is a Quant Strategist and is responsible for building the macro & market analytics platform, which is a key contributor to the investment process. Dr. Wang joined Vanhau AM from Bank of China in Hong Kong where he was part of the Model Validation Unit in the Department of Risk Management from 2014. He was responsible for validating in-house credit risk models and for building empirical stress testing models. Prior to Bank of China, Dr. Wang was teaching Advanced Macroeconomics and Advanced Econometrics for postgraduate students at the Department of Economics of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr. Wang’s vast experience of teaching and research on economics, econometrics, mathematical finance and data science from 2006 gives him deep and systemic understanding of the science underlying modern finance. His teaching stint enabled him to build wide connections within the academic community. Dr. Wang’s other passion has been programming & coding with a special focuses on HPC and Big Data statistics using C++ / Fortran / Java, along with modeling using script languages involving R, Python, SAS, MATLAB, Mathematica to name a few. He is also experienced with cloud computing (AWS), Linux and modern web development including interactive data visualization techniques.
Dr. Wang holds a PhD degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a master degree from Peking University. He is also a chartered FRM.
Neil Leung is an operation analyst supporting the CRO on middle-office risk and control function. Prior to that he worked with Quality Risk Management & Operations Ltd (QRMO), a specialized middle office services provider to hedge funds. His job entailed creating reports on contribution analytics, P&L monitoring and risk management. He has over 5 years of experience in management reporting and performance analytics having worked with Standard Chartered Bank & DBS Global Transaction Services. He is also an experienced programmer in VBA, SAS and R.
Neil is a Bachelor of Science in Statistics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and graduated with a Masters in Economics from The University of Hong Kong. He is also a certified CFA® charter holder.
